Turn your back at the past and face the future

What is modern art? Most people pause when they come across this question. This question may be easy or hard depending on who you ask. For those who never take any art courses or are new in the art world, they may not be able to answer this question. I have two art history courses under my belt, and I think I can answer this question based on what I know. Looking at the artists of the past and their work, you can see a huge difference between the two. Some may say that artists of the past didn’t have the freedom to produce whatever they wanted because most of their work were commissioned by the church or affluent people. The old artists had all the rules to follow and the boundaries, modern art artists threw all that out the window and started to do something different. With the rise of the industrial revolution, the world was moving at a rapid pace and art started to look like doodles or speed paintings.

Modern art also challenged the audience because most of the pieces from this time period came from the artists’ point of view or whatever the artist thought was art. It’s almost like art didn’t have to make sense to the viewer but the artist. One art movement that shows this example is DADA, this movement wasn’t about religious or mythological scenes, it was not about drawing something and let the salon approve it, but rather than simple daily objects that looked like art in the eyes of the artist. For example, look at Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain, most people may see this as an insult to the art world, but the artist think this is art.
